Both machines use electrolysis, both filter tap water and both can produce water with a negative ORP. But they are designed to do different jobs.

The quick answer
The Higen 2+ is the better fit if your priorities are measured molecular hydrogen, serious two-stage filtration, an uncluttered benchtop and a lower purchase price.
The Kangen K8 is the better fit if you specifically want a countertop alkaline water ioniser with selectable pH levels, five water types, high flow and a longer manufacturer’s warranty.
That distinction matters. The Higen 2+ is a dedicated under-sink hydrogen water and filtration system. The K8 is primarily a high-output alkaline water ioniser. It can generate dissolved hydrogen during electrolysis, but Enagic’s official K8 specification focuses on pH and ORP and does not state a molecular-hydrogen concentration in ppb or ppm.12

1 They are not really the same type of machine
The biggest mistake is to treat every electrical water machine as interchangeable.
The Higen 2+ under-sink hydrogen water filter uses proton-exchange membrane technology to make hydrogen-rich drinking water. It also dispenses ordinary purified water and a separate ozone/sterilisation-water setting for cleaning. Its emphasis is hydrogen concentration plus filtration.
The K8 is an eight-plate water ioniser. It separates the incoming stream into alkaline and acidic water and offers five types for different drinking or household uses. If variable pH is your main reason for buying, the K8 has the advantage. If molecular hydrogen is your main reason, the Higen 2+ gives you the more relevant published specification.
2 Higen publishes hydrogen in ppb; K8 publishes ORP
The Higen 2+ has two hydrogen settings, published at approximately 800 to 1,575+ parts per billion. Because 1,000 ppb equals 1 ppm, the top figure is about 1.575 ppm under the stated operating conditions.1
Enagic publishes a maximum negative ORP figure of −722 mV for the K8, but its official specification does not give dissolved hydrogen in ppb or ppm.2 That does not mean the K8 produces no hydrogen. Conventional ionisation produces hydrogen at the cathode. It means the two published numbers are not directly comparable.
3 The upfront price difference is substantial
At the time of checking, the Higen 2+ was listed by AlkaWay at AU$2,999 including GST.1
A current Australian Enagic distributor listing showed the K8 at AU$6,787 including GST.4 Obtain a written quote before deciding, as sellers can update prices and delivery charges.
Using those published figures, the Higen 2+ costs AU$3,788 less upfront. That leaves a meaningful budget for installation, years of filters—or simply staying in your bank account.
4 One hides under the sink; one lives on the bench
The Higen 2+ main unit measures about 340 × 340 × 150 mm and sits below the sink. Only its slim electronic faucet remains visible above the bench. It is an attractive option for a new kitchen or for anyone who dislikes hoses, machines and cables competing with the toaster.
The K8 measures about 279 × 345 × 147 mm and weighs 5 kg. It is designed as a countertop appliance, with a flexible dispensing pipe and a separate discharge hose. Its colour screen and ten-language voice guidance are easy to use, but the machine occupies visible bench space.2
Higen installation is more involved. It requires under-sink space, a cold-water connection, a suitable power point, a hole for the faucet and a drain connection for its cleaning cycle. We recommend installation by a suitably qualified tradesperson.
5 Higen gives filtration a larger role
The Higen 2+ uses two replaceable cartridges. Its first stage combines sediment filtration, calcium sulphite and antimicrobial media. The second uses activated carbon for chlorine by-products, tastes, odours, VOCs and a broader range of common tap-water contaminants. AlkaWay states a rated life of up to 3,000 litres or about 12 months per set, depending on water quality and use.1
The K8 uses Enagic’s FC1 cartridge. Enagic identifies chlorine and lead as its principal reduction claims and gives an approximate life of 6,000 litres, subject to local conditions.5
Neither description should be taken as proof that every possible contaminant is removed from every Australian water supply. If you have bore water, rainwater or a known local concern such as fluoride, PFAS, arsenic or unusually high sediment, ask for advice and relevant test evidence before choosing a system.
6 K8 wins on flow; Higen prioritises contact time
Enagic publishes a Kangen Water flow range of 4.5 to 7.6 litres per minute for the K8.2 That is useful for filling large containers or serving several people quickly.
A dedicated PEM hydrogen system works differently. Dissolving more hydrogen takes time and controlled water contact, so hydrogen-water flow is normally lower than the headline flow of a large alkaline ioniser. The practical question is not simply, “Which machine is fastest?” It is, “What is in the glass at the flow rate I will actually use?”
7 K8 offers more pH levels—but do you need them?
The K8 produces five types of water across a published pH range of 2.5 to 11.5. This includes drinking water, neutral water, beauty water and strong acidic or alkaline settings for specified household purposes.2
The Higen 2+ is not trying to duplicate that menu. It focuses on hydrogen-rich drinking water, purified water and non-drinking ozone/sterilisation water.
If you genuinely plan to use several pH settings, the K8’s versatility may justify part of its extra cost. If you mainly want filtered drinking water with a stated molecular-hydrogen level, extra pH buttons may be features you pay for but rarely use.
8 Both need drainage, but not in the same way
A K8 ionises one incoming stream into alkaline and acidic outputs. Enagic explains that, in alkaline mode, alkaline water exits the flexible pipe while acidic water exits the discharge hose.6 The secondary stream can be collected for appropriate household uses, but it must still be routed correctly.
The Higen 2+ installation manual also requires a drain connection, but describes wastewater being discharged as part of its automatic cleaning cycle rather than as a continuous paired stream every time hydrogen water is dispensed.7
So neither machine should be advertised as completely drain-free. The pattern of discharge is different, and correct plumbing matters for both.
9 Routine filter costs are closer than the machine prices
Each Higen replacement cartridge is currently AU$119, making a full two-filter change AU$238.8 The published interval is up to 3,000 litres or approximately 12 months.
A current Australian Enagic distributor price list showed the FC1 at AU$198 for one, or AU$154 each when buying two or more. The K8 manual uses 6,000 litres or approximately one year as a guide.910
In other words, Higen’s annual filter set is slightly dearer on those published prices, while the K8 costs far more to purchase. K8 owners should also allow for E-cleaning materials, occasional deep cleaning and—when producing strong pH water—electrolysis enhancer. Enagic Australia recommends periodic deep-clean servicing, with timing affected by how regularly the owner performs E-cleaning.6
10 K8 has the longer warranty; Higen offers the lower-cost specialist solution
The K8’s published five-year warranty is a genuine advantage over the Higen 2+ warranty of 12 months for parts and labour.12
Warranty length is not the whole value equation, however. The Higen 2+ is approximately AU$3,788 cheaper on the published purchase prices used above, places the main unit out of sight and gives a stated molecular-hydrogen range. The K8 asks buyers to pay more for a broader ioniser function, faster flow, a sophisticated display and longer warranty.
The better value therefore depends on which benefits you will actually use.
Our verdict: choose by purpose, not by brand recognition
For a household specifically seeking high-concentration hydrogen water and thorough filtration in a discreet under-sink format, we would choose the Higen 2+. It gives a published H₂ range, dual filtration and a much lower initial price.
For someone who wants a traditional alkaline water ioniser first—and will regularly use its different pH waters—the Kangen K8 is the more capable multi-water machine. Its higher flow and five-year warranty are meaningful strengths.
Neither machine is automatically “best” for everyone. Decide whether your real priority is measured molecular hydrogen and filtration, or adjustable pH and multiple water types. Once that is clear, the choice becomes much easier.
