Yes, I know, it’s boring!
But if I told you that reading this boring article may save you $5000, is it still boring?
Total Dissolved Solids are the minerals (and other things you can’t see in your drinking water. For instance, your water may carry large volumes of minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, chlorine and hundreds more.
We’re not concerned with WHAT is in your water at this stage. We are simply concerned about whether your water system can manage high levels of TDS. Simply put, many cannot, and some people are paying over $6000 without understanding this.
Of all the water filter/ ionizer companies, we have seen only one that specifies a TDS beyond which their system cannot function properly. Here’s what they have to say:

All water ionizers operate on the same basic system so it’s fair to say that all ionizers will have the same physical limitations. So whether you buy a $6000 model or a $2000 model, TDS is important. Crucial.
Let’s now look at one indicator of high TDS in Australia. IT’s a map of those areas
- “Hardness (or Calcium Carbonate) over 150 ppm (8.5 grains).
- Iron over .3ppm.
- TDS below 40ppm or over 600ppm.
- Calcium above 50ppm.”

Just so you understand fully, here’s a picture of a $6000 water ionizer’s ‘heart’; its electrolysis plates that do not like hard water. You’ll note the accretion of calcium. When calcium forms it immediately impedes H2 production.
Let’s be clear about why this is so important.
The real therapeutic function of the electrolysis system is to infuse your drinking water with molecular hydrogen. Molecular hydrogen was ignored by the big ionizer companies because they didn’t want to confuse people. They had sold the benefits of “alkaline” water and now they learn that it isn’t the alkaline state of water, but the amount of infused molecular hydrogen. (You may have asked your vendor for results showing how much H2
is in your water).
Unfortunately, it was also found that electrolysis systems are relatively inefficient in H2 production for a number reasons that couldn’t be improved without a complete revamp of their “alkaline’ sales pitch.

Summary: high TDS means poor electric ionizer performance. Best performance can only occur with assiduous and regular cleaning routines (20 minute tap flow every two weeks).
Action: Check the hardness of your local water supply. If TDS is over 150 we do not recommend investment in a water ionizer.
