If you regularly suffer the misery of indigestion, then the chances are you have acid reflux — that’s when stomach acid leaks back up into the tube between your mouth and stomach. Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) occurs when the sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach fails to work properly.
It’s a problem. About 10 per cent of us experience the symptoms daily.
But, researchers are only just beginning to uncover a more sinister side to chronic indigestion.
It turns out that tiny particles of the errant acid can be inhaled, causing lung inflammation. This in turn paves the way for bronchitis, pneumonia and asthma…
And it’s even been linked with an increased risk of oesophagal cancer.
In this situation, most people reach for over-the-counter antacids or a prescription for PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) such as omeprazole.
But this just replaces one set of problems for another, as these can seriously disrupt the balance in your gut and lead to:
- diarrhoea — including a dangerous bacterial form
- skin ageing
- rebound symptoms — increased acid when you stop taking them
- malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, particularly B12 and magnesium, causing further health problems.OK. Can hydrogen water help GERD? We’ve seen some pretty amazing things in this area over our 15 years, but we can’t tell you! It’s illegal. Oh boy.
