Calcium Supplementation and Heart Attacks. What about water ionizer calcium?

This link is perhaps unwelcome but also important. The fact is that the more calcium there is in our water supply, the more concentrated calcium we are drinking in our alkaline ionized water. The would mean – to my thinking – that there is a possibility of excess calcium in areas with hard water. I have yet to see any data from any manufacturers of water ionizers on the dosage of calcium from a water ionizer in relation to maximum RDA, which for a 50-year old male is 1000mg daily.

The latest University laboratory  test we did on our new UltraStream ionizer showed 7.1 (at beginning of filter use) to 9.4( at end of rated life) mg of calcium per litre. Assuming, therefore we drink 2 litres a day we will get a max of 18.8mg of calcium form water that came from the tap at about half of that. Obviously nowhere near the recommended daily dose by the National institute of Health. This equates to what we expect from any electric ionizer; it will basically double to calcium in the output water, but the key is the amount in the input water. (Note: the water source was a municipal water supply supplemented with industrial size RO, meaning its initial calcium level was low)

The answer is -superficially at least – to source our calcium primarily from calciferous greens etc in diet, but the report – for me at least – opens up the whole question of calcium supplementation and what can be regarded as safe calcium. What I perceive is that as long as we accept the idea that more calcium equals better bones, without including the vital missing nutrients K2, D and A in our daily regimen, all we’ll have is a circulatory system loaded up with calcium that’s got nowhere to go.

The report also opens up the concept of the importance of ORP in our water. To me, ORP is what pH tries to give us in our bodies. ORP, particularly the ‘R’ of the ORP – the ‘reducing’ or donating of electrons ability of our water, may be the key to the health changes we see happening. Drinking water loaded with free electrons seems to me to be a short cut to giving the electrons it normally gets from its limited store of alkaline minerals. After all, that’s what they do in the body. They donate electrons to the body to neutralise equal and opposite molecules that need those electrons. So a flood of electrons from the water will find the very molecules we call free radical. Rogue oxygen that is out of balance because of its electrons.

Does this make sense to you?

Inflammation, Acid and Candida

Thanks to Dr Greg Emerson for this link to a study that indicates the relationship between Candida Albicans and inflammation. The study postulates that inflammation can increase candida overgrowth, which in turn increases inflammation.

WE already know that acidic conditions cause inflammation, so when I read the study I thought they could have taken it to the next logical step. To reduce candida overgrowth, reduce acidity, which reduces inflammation.. which reduces Candida. What do you think?

Super Oxide Dismutase: The Anti Aging Factor We Can Change

This little video is very intereresting. It comes from a pro-vegetarian website, and makes the conclusion that superoxide dismutase, the oxidant killer, is much more powerful in vegetarians. Only problem is, as usual.. what is a vegetarian these days? If the SOD support comes from green foods like broccoli and spinach. I’m happy because I eat them daily.. along with meat and fats. But most vegetarians I know (having been one for 12 years) are of the ‘lazy’ variety, bulking up on carbs, especially bread, and really loading up on sugars in the form of fructose and fructan- heavy fruit.

The Good News is that there’s not on but three studies I’ve been able to find demonstrating the ability of alkaline ionized water to biomimic the antioxidant properties of our own natural superoxide dismutase.

Here’s the first…

Active oxygen species or free radicals are considered to cause extensive oxidative damage to biological macromolecules, which brings about a variety of diseases as well as aging. The ideal scavenger for active oxygen should be ‘active hydrogen’. ‘Active hydrogen’ can be produced in reduced water near the cathode during electrolysis of water. Reduced water exhibits high pH, low dissolved oxygen (DO), extremely high dissolved molecular hydrogen (DH), and extremely negative redox potential (RP) values. Strongly electrolyzed-reduced water, as well as ascorbic acid, (+)-catechin and tannic acid, completely scavenged O.-2 produced by the hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase (HX-XOD) system in sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of reduced water is stable at 4 degrees C for over a month and was not lost even after neutralization, repeated freezing and melting, deflation with sonication, vigorous mixing, boiling, repeated filtration, or closed autoclaving, but was lost by opened autoclaving or by closed autoclaving in the presence of tungsten trioxide which efficiently adsorbs active atomic hydrogen. Water bubbled with hydrogen gas exhibited low DO, extremely high DH and extremely low RP values, as does reduced water, but it has no SOD-like activity. These results suggest that the SOD-like activity of reduced water is not due to the dissolved molecular hydrogen but due to the dissolved atomic hydrogen (active hydrogen). Although SOD accumulated H2O2 when added to the HX-XOD system, reduced water decreased the amount of H2O2 produced by XOD. Reduced water, as well as catalase and ascorbic acid, could directly scavenge H2O2. Reduced water suppresses single-strand breakage of DNA b active oxygen species produced by the Cu(II)-catalyzed oxidation of ascorbic acid in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that reduced water can scavenge not only O2.- and H2O2, but also 1O2 and .OH. Electrolyzed-reduced water protects against oxidative damage to DNA, RNA, and protein.

Appl Biochem Biotechnol. 2006 Nov;135(2):133-44.

The generation of reactive oxygen species is thought to cause extensive oxidative damage to various biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and protein. In this study, the preventive, suppressive, and protective effects of in vitro supplementation with electrolyzed-reduced water on H2O2-induced DNA damage in human lymphocytes were examined using a comet assay. Pre-treatment, co-treatment, and post-treatment with electrolyzed-reduced water enhanced human lymphocyte resistance to the DNA strand breaks induced by H2O2 in vitro. Moreover, electrolyzed-reduced water was much more effective than diethylpyrocarbonate-treated water in preventing total RNA degradation at 4 and 25 degrees C. In addition, electrolyzed-reduced water completely prevented the oxidative cleavage of horseradish peroxidase, as determined using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. Enhancement of the antioxidant activity of ascorbic acid dissolved in electrolyzed-reduced water was about threefold that of ascorbic acid dissolved in nonelectrolyzed deionized water, as measured by a xanthine-xanthine oxidase superoxide scavenging assay system, suggesting an inhibitory effect of electrolyzed reduced water on the oxidation of ascorbic acid. We reported that reduced water produced by electrolysis enhanced the antioxidant effects of proton donors such as ascorbic acid (AsA) in a previous paper. We also demonstrated that reduced water produced by electrolysis of 2 mM NaCl solutions did not show antioxidant effects by itself. We reasoned that the enhancement of antioxidant effects may be due to the increase of the ionic product of water as solvent. The ionic product of water (pKw) was estimated by measurements of pH and by a neutralization titration method. As an indicator of oxidative damage, Reactive Oxygen Species- (ROS) mediated DNA strand breaks were measured by the conversion of supercoiled phiX-174 RF I double-strand DNA to open and linear forms. Reduced water had a tendency to suppress single-strand breakage of DNA induced by reactive oxygen species produced by H2O2/Cu (II) and HQ/Cu (II) systems. The enhancement of superoxide anion radical dismutation activity can be explained by changes in the ionic product of water in the reduced water. PMID: 14871602 [PubMed]

The Blood Brain Barrier

Just watching an amazing video on Aspartame. One of the doctors interviewed talked about the effects of free radicals as reducing the thickness of the blood brain barrier, especially as we age. Ouch! Thank God I am on alkaline water

Is your Reverse Osmosis Water stealing nutrients from your body?

That glass of water treated by reverse osmosis (RO) water purifier in your home is certainly keeping you healthy. But it may also be responsible for filtering out minerals that help assimilate vital nutrients and produce vitamin B-12.

No, it’s not proven. Scientific studies and researches are yet to establish this, but conjectures by physicians point a finger at the consumption ofRO water for increasingly large-scale vitamin B-12 deficiency.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency can cause various health problems. Constant back pain, knee pain, fatigue, lack of concentration, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, bleeding gums and even nerve damage (in extreme cases) can be caused by deficiency of vitamin B-12. Vegetarian diet is considered as primarily responsible for the deficiency and RO water further worsens it.

Apart from helping in the prevention of megaloblastic anemia, which makes people tired and weak, vitamin B-12 is also helpful to the body to keep its nerves and blood cells healthy and make DNA. It is a water-soluble vitamin. Vitamin B-12 contains the mineral cobalt.

Dr Bharat Dave, honorary spine surgeon at VS Hospital and NHL Medical College, explains the reasons for blaming RO water for vitamin B-12 deficiency. “There is significant rise in vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many things can be blamed for this including, environment, increased consumption of RO water and food habits. RO water purifiers wash away minerals including iodine and vitamin B-12. This is the belief of doctors as no proper scientific study has been done to establish this. There is a three to four fold increase in the number of patients with B-12 deficiency,” he said.

Dr Sanjiv Shah, director of pathology department of Sterling Hospital says, “It is my observation that number of cases of blood test for checking vitamin B-12 deficiency has increased.”

Ian: My local Doc confirms the B12 deficency in his many local vegetarian clients, but few of them have a Reverse Osmosis system. I’m guessing that this is another ‘iceberg’ issue where it will become clear as more focus is given to the possible correlation. We have an excellent remineraliser and alkaliser cartridge for Reverse Osmosis users that put back the vital magnesium, calcium and potassium. Check it here.
