Quick Quiz: Is this a vegetable?

Well, it depends upon where you live. But as of this week, a pizza, in the US, is officially a vegetable. In a huge win for the food industry lobby, legislators passed this utterly ridiculous law. Here’s the report.

Don’t claim that hydration is a good thing in Europe! Das ist Verboten!

Hydration is good, right? I mean, that’s a given. Equally, dehydration is bad, right.

Not so in Europe under the draconian new laws that are changing the face (for the worse) of natural health alternatives.

dehydration

Tell me what you think of this:

Two Professors submitted a health claim to the EFSA and the European Commission. It was, as health claims go, about as moderate as one can make it. here it is.

“Regular consumption of significant amounts of water can reduce the risk of development of dehydration and of concomitant decrease of performance”

The EFSA rejected it, claiming it was “a measure of water depletion and thus a measure of the disease. (hydration)” and therefore it does not comply with the requirements for a disease risk reduction claim pursuant to NHCR (Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation)

So the good professors are suing the EU.

Ballsy? Ja! Oui! And they are suing the whole shebang. Not just over their rejected claim, but they want the whole regulation system annulled as unworkable.

I’ve been watching the growth of this system of control (Codex)  over what we choose to put in our bodies for the least ten years. Europe is a nutritional war zone right now and yes, folks, this is on the cards for Australia and the US.

A Scientific Study of the Effects of Alkaline Ionized Water we could do without.

As a part of my ongoing research into the many health benefits of alkaline ionized water I get to see many scientific reports. But here’s one that frankly we could all do without. To demonstrate the efficacy of alkaline ionized water these scientists gave hairless lab rats radiation burns… then measured how effective healing was with AI water and tap water. Not surprisingly, the AI water was much better than the tap water.. but.. what were they thinking?

The China Study: I recant.

A couple of years ago I wrote passionate emails about an extraordinary book by T. Colin Campbell, called The China Study. It was all about a huge study carried out in China that ‘proved’ that protein caused cancer and that a vegetarian-based diet was far better.

I was taken in.. like thousands of other laymen, and I hereby publicly recant.

Here’s the blog post that changed my mind. Dr Michael Eades is not just a good writer, he’s one very smart guy and I have to thank him for opening my mind.

Hangover Cure?

hangover cureNew research from the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia has defined the best cure for a hangover. It’s not surprising; coffee and aspirin.

The caffeine in the coffee and the anti-inflammatory effects of aspirin react against ethanol, the demon drink’s actual demon. The study found that it’s the ethanol that brings on the headache because it produces acetate (yes, that clear plastic sheeting stuff!). When researchers induced headaches in rats using ethanol, then fed the lil’ critters caffeine and anti-inflammatories, they found it blocked the acetate production and relieved the headaches.

So we can relieve the effects of a drug – liquor – with a couple of  ’lesser’ drugs. When we discovered alkaline antioxidant water, one of the things that attracted us was the claim that it was an excellent hangover cure. Twelve years later we still don’t know if it’s true – probably because we haven’t gotten drunk enough. My last hangover at age something less than 30 lated 3 days and I never got drunk since.

Do we have any volunteers out there? Perhaps your Christmas dinner?

Outrageous Facts about Bottled Water

California Breakfast

Just back from LA, I’m still reeling from the effect of consumer lifestyle in The US. I’m not saying that we aren’t a  consumer society here in Australia, but most Australians who’ve visited the US say the same; it’s like looking into the future. And here is what Los Angeles people are confronted with at the local breakfast bar!

I also spent almost an hour in a huge Whole Foods store. The sheer volume of bottled water reminded me of this  page about bottled water. Amazing.

Phillips’ New BioLight runs on bacteria

The search for greener, more power-efficient lighting systems won’t stop with compact fluorescents and LED systems if Dutch electronics giant Philips has anything to say about it. In an effort to embrace a truly natural approach to lighting, the company took a cue from fireflies and deep-sea creatures to create a (literally) green light powered not by electricity or sunlight, but by glowing bioluminescent bacteria.

I know the perfect place for it to blaze away happily; teenagers’ rooms.

A good Laugh about Science vs. Wonder

George Bush Acidic? Heavens to Betsy No!

Acidic?

Graham, our general manager, contributes to a health blog in the US. He posts to it just like this blog, and he includes many articles we have on file here in Australia. One such article was written by me about acidic or alkaline ‘personalities’ pointing out that calm people are usually more alkaline, and aggressive people more acidic. The first example of an acidic personality I suggested was the late Saddam Hussein. The second example was of an alkaline type; the Dalai Lama.

Now… up until now Graham has been getting wonderful comments on his articles. But when he added that George Bush was probably and acidic type (and really, folks, look at his diet!) Whaoh! the Americans did NOT like it, accusing him of ‘confusing politics with health’. Which brings me to this rather coincidental link comparing the way Americans think to Europeans.
