How Much Water Should we Drink, when and what type?

hydratefaceThere is just SO much misinformation on the web about how we should approach the concept of hydration.

I recently read a Choice Magazine article on enhanced water, and with the article it claimed that tea and coffee do NOT dehydrate us, claiming scientific studies as proof.

I think many of us are confused, and reports like this don’t help. Cassie and I discussed the question over a hot cup of Lavazza Americano, and realised that we get caught on terminology. When you drink any water based liquid, be it tea, coffee or beer, the water has to go somewhere, (assuming don’t immediately pee it out) and in doing so it cannot NOT hydrate us. So yes, the article was probably correct, but the EFFECT of some drinks are diuretic, which means, simply, they make you pee. So yes, drinking tea or coffee doesn’t dehydrate you, but the effect of drinking them does in the sense that peeing always reduces your level of internal hydration!

Why oh why does everything have to be so darn complex?

Dr Corinne Allen is a died-in-the-wool-ionized water fan and she has spent a lot of time spreading the message. One of her pessages is on this very subject and it includes protocols for the consumption of alkaline ionized water.|

She says drinking ionized water is the easiest single thing you can do to support the environment in your entire body.

Her recommendations are:

Begin by drinking water with a pH of 8.5.
On day 1 drink 2, 8 oz glasses
Day 2 drink 4, 8 oz glasses
Day 3 drink 6, 8 oz glasses
Day 4 drink 8, 8 oz glasses
After this day you should stop drinking any of your former water except for medications or vitamins

For non Americans an 8oz glass is roughly equivalent to a 250ml glass, so she builds up to a total intake of 2 litres, which, coincidentally or not, is the same mantra we have heard for years; drink 8 glasses of water a day.

She says that after day 5 you can move up to higher pH water. She suggests pH 9, but also says that you should stay on 8.5 if ‘symptoms persist’. I’m not sure what she’s referring to but I suspect she refers to the detox symptoms many people experience when beginning alkaline ionized water. Our two year study of users confirmed many common symptoms including shoulder muscle aches, ‘thick’ head, fatigue, skin problems and cold symptoms, which just happn to be the same symptoms I have experienced many timed during detox sessions regardless of the protocol.

After day 5 begin on 9.0 water or when symptom free from the 8.5 water.

She encourages us to eventually move to pH 9.5, but to take it easy and not be afraid to drop back to a lower pH if symptoms make like difficult.

After this breaking in period she recommends building up to 1 oz of water per pound of body weight. I get a bit lost in translation here so I’ll assume she is talking about pounds of body weight and ozs of water, in which case I, at 85kg, am 187 pounds, so I would be trying for 185 oz of water, which equates to 5530 ml of water, or 5.53 litres, which at 250ml per glass, equals 22 glasses!

Help me out here. have I converted incorrectly? Is she really asking me to drink 22 glasses of water? In an 8 hour day, that’s a glass of water every 22 minutes. I think my boss would be getting a little irate about my pee breaks!

She does have a caveat. She says we should only drink an oz of  ionized water per half our body weight, the rest should be purified water. So.. up to noon, 11 glasses of ionized water. after noon, 11 glasses of pure water. That would be the simplest to implement and remember.

She also cautions seniors (like me), those with sever illness or with brain injury to go much slower.

Now here’s the interesting bit. She says that you must opt for more neutral pH water during your detox period. Simply put, the more water, the faster the detox. I have a bit of a problem with this because excess water consumption will leach your electrolytes. i have known people to faint from excess water consumption.

I certainly agree with her admonishment to not be in a  hurry to detox. Men seem to be the culprits here. Getting their new water ionizer seems to be similar to getting a new car or motorcyle. They want to go as fast as they can.

Dr Allen continues with a few recommendations on what to eat during your introduction to the water. She makes the point that it took a long time to become acid so it’s unreasonable to expect alkalinization to happen overnight.

Her other recommendations include getting completely off sodas, and meat for the duration of the detox, but perversely, she recommends FRUIT and vegetables. Given the high acid-loading you experience with almost all fruit, this may be a popular recommendation but not one that stands up to scrutiny. She recommends fruit smoothies with riceprotein; both acidifying, with fruit smoothies being literally fructose on steroids and an instant acid overload.

Summarizing, Dr Allen has made a pretty good fist of a hydration and alkalizing regimen, with a few small things I disagree with. From my own research the jury is still out on optimum amounts of water we should drink per day, and certainly new research casts even more doubt on our newfound need to load up on H2O. However it’s my view after talking to thousands on the same subject that 8 glasses a day is a pretty good average.

Ketogenic Diet for Cancer Recovery? An interesting Video

As my readers are aware, both Cassie and I are on a ketogenic diet, A.K.A. Alkaline Paleo Diet. We have a good friend in Chicago battling her own brain cancer on a ketogenic diet, recommended by her doctor.

This quite detailed video below is really worth persisting with.

I found this article on Joe Mercola’s site, even though Cassie and I have been also researching ti for a long time. Here’s the link to Dr Mercola’s quite excellent summary.

Is your dog’s health important to you?

I’ve been reading quite a bit recently about the relationship of dogs to the mental state of their owners. All articles seem to agree that a stressed master equals a stressed dog – and that dogs subjected to any form of intense stress can develop quite serious acidosis.

Learning that a cat or dog has something as dire sounding as metabolic acidosis, can make any pet owner concerned for their pet’s health. Metabolic acidosis is a complicated diagnosis because it may be a symptom of many other pet illnesses. Metabolic acidosis itself refers to the cat or dog’s body having an imbalance of acids and bases. Kidney damage, congenital kidney disease, diabetes, snake bites, and even ingesting antifreeze can all lead to metabolic acidosis and overall poor pet health.

Metabolic Acidosis Symptoms

Often owners are unaware that their cat or dog has this condition in the early stages as it can be a silent illness with no symptoms. In later stages of the disease, pets (both cats and dogs) may vomit, be lethargic, and stumble when walking. Pets may also have weight loss without explanation.

So when I saw this study below, I realised that we have an answer for the serious dog owner that will assist their dog and, as a side benefit, themselves. It’s alkaline ionized water. Here’s the study abstract:

Metabolic acidosis can occur as a result of either the accumulation of endogenous acids or loss of bicarbonate from the gastrointestinal tract or the kidney, which represent common causes of metabolic acidosis. The appropriate treatment of acute metabolic acidosis has been very controversial. Ionized alkaline water was not evaluated in such groups of patients in spite of its safety and reported benefits. So, we aimed to assess its efficacy in the management of metabolic acidosis in animal models. Two models of metabolic acidosis were created in dogs and rats. The first model of renal failure was induced by ligation of both ureters; and the second model was induced by urinary diversion to gut (gastrointestinal bicarbonate loss model). Both models were subjected to ionized alkaline water (orally and by hemodialysis). Dogs with renal failure were assigned to two groups according to the type of dialysate utilized during hemodialysis sessions, the first was utilizing alkaline water and the second was utilizing conventional water. Another two groups of animals with urinary diversion were arranged to receive oral alkaline water and tap water. In renal failure animal models, acid-base parameters improved significantly after hemodialysis with ionized alkaline water compared with the conventional water treated with reverse osmosis (RO). Similar results were observed in urinary diversion models as there was significant improvement of both the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and serum bicarbonate (P = 0.007 and 0.001 respectively) after utilizing alkaline water orally. Alkaline ionized water can be considered as a major safe strategy in the management of metabolic acidosis secondary to renal failure or dialysis or urinary diversion. Human studies are indicated in the near future to confirm this issue in humans.

The reports keep coming!

David, our resident brains trust located this excellent scientific report on the de-acidifying effect of our water. he was researching an article on alkaline ionized water and the paleo diet, which I’ve added below.

Alkalising and the Paleo Diet

by David Kirby

AlkaWay Alkaline Specialist

The Paleo Diet, or Stone Age Diet, is based upon what human hunter-gatherer ancestors commonly ate in the Paleolithic era of pre-history. They relied mainly on a high-protein diet of meats and saturated fats for the majority of their energy. Lots of vegetables, some seasonal fruit and weight-bearing (carrying hunks of dead mammoth) exercise are also key parts of the Paleo Diet, but grains and processed sugars must be avoided.

According to “Contemporary Nutrition: Functional Approach” by Gordon Wardlaw, there are still some indigenous peoples today who are considered hunter-gatherers, and many studies reveal their robust health, strong bones, and low incidents of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, depression and even dental caries.  The Neolithic era began after the Paleolithic and is marked by farming and agriculture of grains. But based on fossil evidence, human stature and health conditions reduced after this change, despite some of the advantages of growing domesticated crops.

The Paleo Diet is based on a large variety of scientific research, although there is a concern that high-protein diets not balanced with lots of vegetables can lead to over-acidity in your body, or acidosis.

Paleo dieters need  a constant balance of;

 (a) the amount of protein consumed – excess protein turns to metabolic acid and

(b) sufficient greens – a daily recommendation is up to 7 cups of greens.

(c) carbohydrates – the aim of the diet is to remove carbohydrates from the body for many, many reasons including their acidifying effect.

Too much protein causes the body to revert to glucogenesis; the body’s production of glocose. The aim of the paleo diet is to convert from a  glucose-fuelled metabolism to the natural template of ketogenesis.

Sufficient greens counter this by neutralising acids including acids caused by glucogenesis production.

.Acidosis  is quite simply when the pH of the blood falls below the bottom end of the healthy pH range (normal range is 7.35-7.45).
The greens are a natural detoxifier, alkalizer and antioxidant. Given that many Paleo dieters are also high performance athletes, a regular supply of antioxidants keeps inflammation at bay. However the ability of most people to manage 7 cups of greens a day can be difficult.

Acidosis can be an acute condition (develops quickly) or it may be a chronic condition. Acidosis may not cause any symptoms or it may be associated with nonspecific symptoms such as lethargy, depression, nausea and vomiting.

Acute acidosis may also cause an increased rate and depth of breathing, confusion and headaches, and it can lead to seizures, coma, and in some cases death.

Luckily there is a simple and easy solution to this issue. Recent studies at the

Department of Urology, El Mansoura Urology and Nephrology Centre, MansouraUniversity, have shown that in animal experiments that acid/alkaline parameters improved significantly after using ionized alkaline water compared with the conventional water treated with reverse osmosis (RO). Similar results were observed in urinary models. There was significant improvement of both the partial pressure of carbon dioxide and serum bicarbonate after oral ingestion of alkaline water.  The University quotes “Alkaline ionized water can be considered as a major safe strategy in the management of metabolic acidosis.“

The University is about to start experiments in the very near future to confirm this issue in humans.

Therefore combining the Paleo Diet with drinking Alkalised Ionized water can be critical to better long term health benefits.

It may also help with the weight loss issues by helping neutralise acids that are normally stored in body fat to protect the body from over acidity.

Rob’s Story about Acid Reflux and Arthritis

Rob is a blogger in Canada. He’s also a very keen advocate of alkaline water since he began on it 4 and a half years ago.

Here’s his latest post from his blog at waterfyi.com.

“Anyone that has read my blog knows that I’m a strong advocate of drinking ionized/energized water. If you have ever clicked on the goofy “Hello My Name is Rob” link in the top right hand corner of the home page of my blog, you will know that my life changed when I started drinking alkaline water about 4 1/2 hears ago. Prior to drinking alkaline water, I was taking a medication for arthritis, another for acid reflux, and had received a prescription to start taking a third drug to control the level of cholesterol in my blood. Within a week of drinking the water, my acid reflux disappeared. My arthritis disappeared within a month. I never did start taking the drug for cholestol and it has not been a problem.

All is good….right? Yup. For four years I faithfully drank the water and the physical problems that I had previously suffered from were no longer an issue.

Along comes the summer of 2012. Maybe I was trying to create my own personal armegeddon, or maybe I secretly wanted to see if I was “cured” of my previous health issues, or maybe life just got in the way.

With 4 of the 5 kids now living on their own, we decided that it was “our time”. We down-sized and moved closer to our cottage. A series of events beyond our control took place in the last four months that left us without a water ionizer. I could have retrieved a unit from storage, but life was busy and I didn’t really experience any significant degree of acid reflux or arthritis…until about three weeks ago.

At some point in October, my acid reflux started to act up and has been getting progressively worse. In the past two weeks or so, I have been experiencing more and more aches and pains. It suddenly occured to me that it was time to get back on the water. Unfortunately, our kitchen was being renovated until this past week. When the granite counter was finally installed, I added an under the counter natural water ionizer.

The change in my health within a couple of days of starting to drink the water again has been remarkable. The acid reflux has almost disappeared (the exception being when I had pizza with the kids late Friday night). The aches and pains from arthritis have been getting better every day.

Summary

Drinking ionized/energized water changed my life more than four years ago. It might change yours.

Don’t stop drinking ionized water after it stops working unless you have a well entrenched alkaline diet and you exercise and make a conscious effort to reduce stress in your life. Even if you do all of those things, I would still recommend drinking the water based upon many discussions I have had with vegetarians who found the water made a positive difference in their lives. Regardless of whether you drink the water or not, I still recommend that everyone eat the right foods, exercise, and reduce stress…..but I know from personal experience that it is easier said than done.”

Note: Rob’s story is Rob’s story. We don’t imply that you will get similar results and you should always check in with a qualified quack  er… doctor before modifying your present health regime. And never run with scissors.

Calcium Supplementation and Heart Attacks. What about water ionizer calcium?

This link is perhaps unwelcome but also important. The fact is that the more calcium there is in our water supply, the more concentrated calcium we are drinking in our alkaline ionized water. The would mean – to my thinking – that there is a possibility of excess calcium in areas with hard water. I have yet to see any data from any manufacturers of water ionizers on the dosage of calcium from a water ionizer in relation to maximum RDA, which for a 50-year old male is 1000mg daily.

The latest University laboratory  test we did on our new UltraStream ionizer showed 7.1 (at beginning of filter use) to 9.4( at end of rated life) mg of calcium per litre. Assuming, therefore we drink 2 litres a day we will get a max of 18.8mg of calcium form water that came from the tap at about half of that. Obviously nowhere near the recommended daily dose by the National institute of Health. This equates to what we expect from any electric ionizer; it will basically double to calcium in the output water, but the key is the amount in the input water. (Note: the water source was a municipal water supply supplemented with industrial size RO, meaning its initial calcium level was low)

The answer is -superficially at least – to source our calcium primarily from calciferous greens etc in diet, but the report – for me at least – opens up the whole question of calcium supplementation and what can be regarded as safe calcium. What I perceive is that as long as we accept the idea that more calcium equals better bones, without including the vital missing nutrients K2, D and A in our daily regimen, all we’ll have is a circulatory system loaded up with calcium that’s got nowhere to go.

The report also opens up the concept of the importance of ORP in our water. To me, ORP is what pH tries to give us in our bodies. ORP, particularly the ‘R’ of the ORP – the ‘reducing’ or donating of electrons ability of our water, may be the key to the health changes we see happening. Drinking water loaded with free electrons seems to me to be a short cut to giving the electrons it normally gets from its limited store of alkaline minerals. After all, that’s what they do in the body. They donate electrons to the body to neutralise equal and opposite molecules that need those electrons. So a flood of electrons from the water will find the very molecules we call free radical. Rogue oxygen that is out of balance because of its electrons.

Does this make sense to you?

Sugar = acid = health = NOT! Alkaline Diet Loopholes.

What is it going to take before our main alkaline diet afficiaonados realise that a very large number of the recommended ‘alkaline’ foods on their alkaline food list deliver many times the amount of fructose as alkaline minerals? I’m OVER hearing about alkaline balance from people peddling acid-creating fructose-laden alternatives.

For those of us till wondering what sugar or good old ‘healthy’ fructose has to do with health outcomes, this little video may give them a hint.
